1. Be self-aware
What actions can you take to really understand your interests, values, skills, personality and strengths?
By involving myself In opportunities that work on self development and targeting certain areas that require self improvement. By becoming vulnerable and recognising and understanding weaknesses in myself to then ask for help and guidance in the future. But also by involving myself in activities that interest me to gain deeper insight and knowledge to then pass on to my peers and colleagues, creating a mutually beneficial cycle. These activities can include but not limited to Volunteering, community engagement, team managing and playing social sports. I also strive to better understand myself by undertaking personality tests such as the Myers-Briggs tests which showed I have a ENTP-A personality this tells me I have a innovative mind and the ability to see potential in things others cannot however it also means that my ideas can be impractical and irrational so I need to focus on honing those thoughts and filtering good from bad. and then reflect on them to connect myself with like minded people and help better forge relationships with individuals who have different personality types to me. To summarise my self awareness comes from further self discovery and exploration through both internal and external means.
2. Explore your options
What do you need to research to be clear about your options? What could you do to learn more about career options in your areas of interest?
As sport management can be a very diverse heading I will need to delve deeper into what branches come of the main heading, such as team management, player management, event management and many more. This will then give me a more pinpoint direction in which I aim to go into allowing me to network and get into contact with the right people needed. I aim to achieve this by attending networking events ands joining a sporting corporation at a more base level entry job and then working my way up and I recognise it is difficult and a long journey to break into the large positions. This would require me to gain internships and attend further professional development workshops to expand and also hone my current skills.
3. Gain experience and insight
What actions could you take to help you learn more about your industry or find opportunities to develop your skills or find work experience opportunities?
I aim beginning to look into local sporting organisations and their opportunities and get into contact with the right people to potentially gain an internship shadowing a member of their staff in a management position, this will then not only gain me necessary workplace experience but also put my name into the system and offer me positive references when needed in the future. Gaining work experience under a few positions would potentially also benefit me as I would be able to gain a clearer idea into what niche branch interests me the most and where I would love to take my career.
4. Evidence your skills (knowledge, skills and attributes)
What action can you take to find out more about what skills you might need to develop in your future career? How might you document/record these?
Talking to industry professionals and the current network of professionals I have around me. They are the prime people to gain me initial contact with the right people and to begin my career journey through experience and internships. By delving into further research and looking into my current university course and what opportunities I can gain from there, speaking with people in my local sporting clubs and begin in a entry level position. As well by attending networking events and taking advantage of opportunities offered to me at university that will help benefit and push me further in the industry. All of the experience I gain and opportunities small or large I am then able to add to my Linkedin profile, to further improve my ranking and my employability to potential employers.
5. Develop networks
